X header banner: first impressions on your profile
The X (formerly Twitter) header banner is 1500×500 pixels — a wide, panoramic format that dominates your profile page. It is the first large visual element visitors see and sets the tone for your entire presence on the platform. Use it to communicate your brand identity, current focus, or a visual that reinforces your bio. Keep in mind that your profile picture (400×400px circle) overlaps the bottom-left corner of the header, so leave that area free of important content.
Profile picture on X: consistency across the platform
Your X profile picture appears everywhere: in the timeline next to every post, in replies, in search results, and in your profile header. At 400×400 pixels displayed as a circle, it needs to be instantly recognisable even at very small sizes (as small as 24px in some contexts). For personal accounts, a clear headshot with a simple background works best. For brand accounts, your logo centred with padding is the standard approach. Avoid putting text in your profile picture — it becomes illegible at small sizes.
Post images on X: what gets engagement
X post images display at 1200×675 pixels (16:9 ratio) in the timeline. Posts with images receive significantly more impressions and engagements than text-only posts. The algorithm tends to show image posts more widely. Keep your most important content in the centre of the image, as X can crop images in preview. Avoid white backgrounds — posts with higher contrast images tend to stand out more in a fast-scrolling timeline.
Rebranding from Twitter to X: what changed for images
Since the platform rebranded from Twitter to X, the fundamental image size requirements have remained the same — 1500×500 header, 400×400 profile picture, 1200×675 post images. What changed is the visual language of the platform: the blue bird logo is gone, and X has adopted a darker, more minimalist aesthetic. If you previously had Twitter branding in your header, now is a good time to update it with a cleaner design that fits the current X aesthetic.
